The Next Step After Relief
Last week, we talked about why relief is only the beginning.
This week, we go deeper into why maintaining relief matters.
Next week, we’ll put this into practice with a new tool and a new way to address knots entirely.
For now, let’s focus on what happens after tension is released.
Why Knots Return
When you release a muscle knot, the tissue temporarily becomes:
More mobile
More pliable
Less restricted
But it also becomes vulnerable.
If nothing changes afterward, the body often returns to old patterns — and eventually, the knot returns too.
This is where maintenance begins.
The 3-Step Maintenance Blueprint
1. Stretch to Keep It Elastic
The Goal:
Prevent tissues from stiffening back into old patterns.
The Approach:
Slow, sustained stretches work better than aggressive pulling.
Think:
Longer holds
Gentle tension
No bouncing
Focus on the exact area you released.
2. Move to Keep It Mobile
The Goal:
Keep muscles and connective tissues moving smoothly.
Movement restores:
Blood flow
Hydration
Mobility
Body awareness
Simple movements work best:
Hip circles
Cat-Cow movements
Walking
Light yoga flows
Think of movement as teaching your body how to use its new range again.
3. Strength Train to Keep It Strong
The Goal:
Create enough strength so the body feels safe staying there.
Often, tight areas are also weak areas.
If muscles remain weak, the nervous system frequently responds by creating tension again.
Controlled movements work best:
Slow squats
Controlled lunges
Glute bridges
Full range movements
Strength gives your body permission to stay mobile.
Daily Habits Matter More
The biggest difference usually comes from small things done repeatedly:
Move often
Break up long periods of sitting
Stay hydrated
Tissues need water to remain elastic
Keep maintaining
Release work works best when it becomes routine
The Bigger Picture
Pain relief isn’t usually one moment.
It’s a process.
Release.
Stretch.
Move.
Strengthen.
Then repeat.
Next week, we take this one step further.
